It's time for Africa!
We are 21 students at the master programme Design for Sustainable Development at Chalmers Architecture in Gothenburg. We are a mix of students with a background in interior, architecture, spatial planning and engineering from different schools in Sweden, Finland, England and Kenya.
Reality Studio is a course working with a form of real-life project in Africa, this year in Kisumu, a city in west Kenya by the lake Victoria. The course at Chalmers have a close collaboration with two research programs, Eco-tourism and Marketplaces, by Maseno and Jooust Universities in Kisumu and Chalmers and Gothenburg Universities in Sweden connected by the organisation Mistra Urban Futures.
The studio started last Monday and so far we have had lectures about the current state of Kisumu and the research projects about marketplaces and eco-tourism. We have discussed the themes and ideas about possible projects.
We are leaving tomorrow for 7 weeks in Kenya. We will start with a few days in Nairobi before we are heading to Kisumu. After some weeks we hope to have found ideas and projects to work with, dealing with sustainable development of environmental, social and economical issues. After 7 weeks we will present our ideas for the inhabitants of Kisumu before heading back to Sweden to eat eggs and candy and finalize our project before the summer.
Follow us, it will be fun!!
